After taking 3 month of course in 2017 at Gexton Education I developed a good network there so when I entered in my graduation year at University of Sindh in January 2019 I was playing cricket at my home town Bhit Bhaiti I received a call from Gexton Education:
Gexton: Hey we are participating in an event called Startup Showcase at Isra University so you had an idea about developing a Banquet Booking System so come and we will give you a stall to present there. The event is after 2 days.
Me: Startup what? Anyways I m at my home town I can’t come.
Gexton: We are going to have “Biryani” (Rice Dish Very Popular) and chilling enjoyable event.
Me:
I had no clear idea about startups or what I was going to present at the stall, so I called my colleagues and told them about the event and the free food. They agreed to join immediately 😂.
But as you know, fate had something else planned. I quickly developed a one-screen Android app prototype to search available banquets by date and location, along with a simple slide presentation. When we arrived at the event, we saw a huge audience and impressive stalls, and we set up our laptop to present our idea.
We had no clear idea how to pitch our startup or what to say, so we developed a strategy called the “Jhinga Strategy (Shimmer Strategy)”. It means that if you don’t know something, act like you know by asking a smart counter question just like a shimmer effect in apps that shows loading in the same UI shape.
So whenever someone came and asked, “How will you earn?”, I replied: “We know it, but we are here to talk to people and validate our idea. I would love to know your thoughts about our business model so I can better understand end-user psychology” 🙈.
When they shared their ideas, I signaled my colleagues to note everything down. Then, when the next person came, we used the same points 😂. That’s how we developed our first startup pitch and learned what a startup really is.
After achieving free food, which was our main goal 😂, we were called for the award ceremony. I was surprised and thought, “There is an award ceremony too?”
Our sponsor, the Gexton team, told me, “If anyone from Gexton wins an award, capture the images while receiving it.” So when the 3rd position was awarded to Gexton, I clicked the pictures. Then I turned back and waited. The 2nd position was also awarded to Gexton, and again I took photos.
When I turned back once more, suddenly there was an announcement:
“And the First position goes to the CheckEve team from Gexton!”
I immediately gave the phone to the Gexton manager and said, “Now it’s your turn to click ours!” 😄 Meanwhile, my colleagues were still sitting on their chairs, thinking we would never make it to 1st position just like I thought!
Well it was the time to go with the flow and we acted as professionals so that no one should doubt whats the story behind 😂.
So Gexton manager took all trophies to capture the moment later my colleague took 3rd position trophy and I was like: Why ? He said we won the 3rd didn’t we ? Because he was still not believing that we can win 1st🥇.
Got an Internship as Android Developer
So that’s how that unexpected win got me an internship at Gexton Software house then incubation of startup of CheckEve. I learned advance android programming with Firebase and you know I already was familiar with JMeter to scale the app I used thread pool to make app faster.
